Raphael was born into a well off family and, basically, he was spoiled. His father was high up in a big company which meant they had money to spare, and year after year of sun-filled holidays away overseas, Raphael grew up expecting that life would always be so fun, free, and easy. All the way through school Raphael flunked off and messed around with the belief that he didn't need to work hard because he didn't need to work hard when he was older.
When Raphael left school his parents tried to push him towards University and wanted him to get a degree, but Raphael had other ideas.Even with his parents telling him that they'd pay for his fees and everything so all he had to do was turn up to class, Raphael still refused. With a lot of effort and endless nagging, Raphael finally convinced his parents that taking a few years off to travel would be beneficial to him.
There was one condition to his travels, as enforced by his father, and that was that he wasn't allowed to just make a holiday of his time off, and he actually needed to be doing something practical with it. So, completely out of his control, Raphael spent his first three months out of school volunteering in a poor part of Africa. His parents were fully expecting that he'd be begging to come home and hate working out there, but to their surprise, he found that he actually rather enjoyed it, and once those three months were up he hitchhiked off to another part of Africa and found a part time job on a two month contract, and so, a cycle began.
Raphael has now been out of school for three years and he's still traveling, going from place to place on short-term contracts, working for a while and then moving on to somewhere new. He still can't imagine himself going to University and settling into some ordinary job or anything, but he's a little bit more focused now to what he used to be. If nothing else, when he's not working he enjoys visiting various sites and tourist locations and finding out more about the history of the area that he's in.
The next stop for Raphael is a small island called Tully which he's heard about, and he's interested in learning more about the history of the place since he's heard it has a past a little different to anywhere he's heard of before. He's not sure quite what he's going to do when he gets there as far as jobs are concerned, but he always just works things out one step at a time.
Raphael is a really charismatic guy with a carefree attitude. Although he does take like a little more seriously than he did at eighteen, he's still refusing to properly grow up, always jumping from place and place and making few commitments there. As much as he doesn't want to return home and wind up in some boring 9 to 5 office job in some company, he knows that he can't keep on traveling forever. He's sort of hoping that one of these days he's going to find a place that really catches his interest, and he's going to be able to settle there for longer than just a month or two. He's never really committed to anywhere or any thing for long, so it'll have to be really worth it to make him stay.
More than anything, Raphael likes diving in and really getting involved in a new culture somewhere, and prefers the locals side of life to the purely tourist one. He's a sociable sort of person and pretty confident, too, so starting off somewhere is fairly easy for him. Quite often, you'll find him checking out the local bars since he loves a good drink and a party, and how better to meet someone than where alcohol is involved?

Just from watching how Elizabeth acted, it was obvious that those at the table he'd just left were giving her bother. Without even turning around to look, Raphael lifted his hand and flipped them the bird, sending a wink towards Elizabeth. "What they gunna do? Start a fight in the library?" He heard a 'tsk' sound from behind him and grinned. Winding other students up was the best fun.
“They’re bookish, sure, but not exactly harmless.”
"I repeat, what they gunna do?" Raphael didn't really see the point of them getting prissy with him - it was just work after all. And it was nothing they weren't capable of handling themselves.
“Sometimes I wonder how you pass your exams. You’ve got to be either incredibly clever or incredibly lucky. Have you considered anything about your future?”
He grinned, then followed up with a shrug. "I've still got money in my savings account that my parents don't know I have access to. There's nothing to consider until that runs dry." That was about as far as his future plans extended. He didn't care about school, or work, or learning, or any of that sort of stuff. All he cared about was having fun, and alcohol of course... Alcohol was the meaning of life. "Some people think too much - expect too much. It just throws them completely when they realize life isn't gunna be handed to them on a silver platter and they're never going to get as far as they want to get. Set the bar low, and you can only succeed." Even if that bar was just scrounge off a savings account he shouldn't have access to and drink.
