609 word count || no notes Wearing nothing but a plain black t-shirt and a pair of jeans, Marietta quickly and quietly made her way out of her apartment complex, heading towards the woodland. It was dark out and there was a slight breeze which she was grateful for, the day had been warm and she was glad for the cooler air that came with the night. It wasn't that Marietta didn't like the heat, she loved it, but after a while it became stifling and a slight wind was always refreshing. She'd been in Tully for almost a year now, this summer marking her move here, and she'd grown accustomed to the place. It had only taken her a few months to settle in and find the best places to go but she was yet to grow bored of the place which surprised both herself and her parents, it was such a small island they'd expected her to have moved off by now. She liked it here though, she had a job she enjoyed and a flat of her own and the choice to take her animorph form whenever she wished, much different from the other places she'd been to where she had to be more careful. Of course, she had to be careful here to, or so her father had warned her. "Be careful in Tully, Mary, not all those who live there are accepting," he'd said almost everyday for a week until she left and, although each time she'd roll her eyes and sigh, the warning had stuck. Now though as she wandered towards the woodland she allowed herself to be a little less cautious, after all it was almost two in the morning, who would be out walking this late at night? Well, she would be, but that was because Marietta loved the night. That and she was feeling restless. Even when tired she found it hard to just stay still and laying down long enough to fall asleep always proved to be a problem for her. She was a good way into the woodland when she finally came to a stop near a large tree, staring up at where the sky was blocked out by long branches covered with leaves. With a smile and a quiet laugh, Marietta transformed into her animorph form, that of a small squirrel monkey, and began to climb the tree. As far as she was concerned this was her tree, the one she always came to when she was feeling like this. It had good strong branches that would support her weight as both a human and a monkey which made it perfect for climbing in both forms. Marietta climbed until she reached the highest branch she could get without being on top of the tree itself and stopped, looking down at the ground with a laugh. It was high up, if she suffered from a fear of heights she was sure she'd be seconds away from vomiting, but as it were she loved them. Heights were good, they gave you an advantage and you could see much further than when you were on ground, they were perfect. With much concentration, making sure to not fall because it would surely hurt her a great deal, Marietta turned back into her human form, perching herself on the branch with her back leaning against the trunk, one leg bent with her foot resting on the branch, the other handing down, swinging back and forth. She figured she'd leave in a few moments, she'd grow bored of sitting here quickly and would be off again, but for now she whistled a quiet tune, staring out across the woods. |
